NOTO DANCE PROJECT (tentative)
Report on Improvised Creative Activities in Noto Peninsula, March 2025
Visit Background
On March 29–30, 2025, we made a quick, two-day trip to the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, an area still recovering from the major earthquake that struck in January 2024. While many communities have made progress, traces of the disaster remain.
This visit was initiated by Mr. Kato, the representative of MUTUBE, a media documenting post-disaster life. After receiving his invitation, Ryo decided to head to the region and invited me to join the trip.
Activities Conducted On-Site
Despite having no fixed program in advance, we responded flexibly to local conditions and carried out several impromptu activities, including:
- A dance workshop at a school on its final day before closure
- An interactive session with residents at a temporary housing community center, using DJing and lighting
- A simple lighting setup at “Motoya Super,” a facility housing evacuees and volunteers, creating a relaxing pre-bedtime atmosphere
- An impromptu dance performance at an Olympic-related gathering of athletes and staff
Each activity was shaped in the moment based on direct interaction with those present. It was a reminder of how dance, sound, and light can foster connection and bring smiles, even in challenging circumstances.
Personal Perspective
As a dancer, I’ve come to believe that great dance is born not just from movement itself, but from the surrounding environment—good sound, atmosphere, people, and even nature. These elements come together to create moments when people naturally feel like moving or find peace just being there.
That’s why I view dancing and space-making as deeply connected. This trip allowed me to put that idea into practice, and judging from the warm reactions we received, I feel encouraged to continue developing this direction.
I hope to keep creating moments and spaces where people can feel safe, inspired, and connected—whether through dance, music, light, or shared time.
NOTO DANCE PROJECT（仮）能登半島訪問レポート（2025年3月）
訪問の経緯
2025年3月29日から30日にかけて、一泊二日の弾丸スケジュールで石川県・能登半島を訪れました。
この地域は、2024年1月の地震により大きな被害を受け、現在も多くの地域で復興が続いています。今回の訪問は、被災地の暮らしを記録するメディア「MUTUBE」代表の加藤氏から、友人のRyo氏に声がかかったことをきっかけに実現しました。Ryo氏の誘いを受け、私も同行しました。
現地で行った主な活動
事前に細かな計画があったわけではなく、現地の状況を見ながら即興的に活動しました。主な内容は以下の通りです。
- 廃校となる小学校でのダンスワークショップ（最終登校日に実施）
- 仮設住宅の集会場で、DJプレイと照明を使った空間演出と住民との交流
- 「もとやスーパー」（避難者・ボランティアの滞在施設）での、就寝前の照明によるリラックス演出
- オリンピック関係者が集まる会合にて、即興ダンスパフォーマンスを実施
それぞれの活動は、現場での出会いや空気感に合わせて展開されたものであり、事前に想定されていたものではありませんでした。即興的ではありましたが、音や光、身体の動きが人と人の距離を縮め、笑顔を引き出してくれる場面が多くありました。
活動を通して考えたこと
私はダンサーとして活動する中で、良いダンスは動きだけで完結するものではなく、良い音や空気感、そこにいる人たち、自然環境などが重なり合った中で生まれるものだと感じるようになりました。
そうした環境が整うことで、人は自然と身体を動かしたくなったり、心が安らいだりする。その“心の動き”こそが、ダンスを生み出す土台だと思っています。
そのため、私は踊ることと空間を整えることを切り離さず、同じ目的に向かう行為として取り組んでいます。今回の能登での活動も、そうした考えのもとで動いてみたもので、多くの方々の笑顔に出会うことができました。この方向性を大切にしながら、今後もさまざまな場で人と空間がつながる瞬間をつくっていきたいと考えています。
